Ming Thompson, an architect and principal at design firm Atelier Cho Thompson and proud owner of eight of these totes, says, “You might think this is a bag, but you’d be mistaken. Everything they make is just like it was save for minor changes and variances as oft happens in manufacturing.“No one can top the L.L.Bean Boat and Tote,” says Chris Black, host of the podcast How Long Gone, and our writers and editors heartily agree - so much so that the Boat and Tote is featured on the Strategist 100, our roundup of the best, most stood-behind products that have ever appeared on this website. But, what these asshats have also done in their anger, is then go online and say that when the warranty was backpedaled, they went into the bean boot factory and switched out leather for pleater, polyester yarn for water soluble yarn, hard rubber soles for old bubble gum and the like. This part, I get as if I buy a lifetime warranty item, the only exception I should see should be the death of the company. Similar to item 1, there are people who think LL Bean is Chairman Mao now as they stepped away from their warranty. So asking this is pretty silly as LL Bean dog toys are obviously not BIFL but LL Bean bean boots are BIFL. Almost no brands are BIFL as you can't throw a blanket over a brand. So nothing LL Bean is good, regardless of opinions or data from now until the moon cracks in two and we ride on big horses like in Thundarr the Barbarian. Many do this and since they can't, they think LL Bean is literal Hitler for this. They can no longer return LL Bean garage sale items for full MSRP.Here are the points to swallow and any downvoters are in this category of ignorance. Many BIFL people are Big Mad about LL Bean for the following reasons: It'll probably take another 20 years though. Eventually I'll cut it up to use as cleaning rags or shop towels. To the original question? I have some really old LL Bean stuff, and it's worn to heck. As for them protecting their profit margins? Good for them. From my perspective their response might have seemed abrupt, but even now people are acting like the company owes them something. I think they handled closing that program well by allowing folks to do returns for a year with proof of purchase. Once the shabby recast the intent to mean the people expected lifetime replacements, it was pretty easy math to determine that the profit gained from that sale would be eaten away by people kiting their one purchase of a pair of pants into 10 pairs, by returning them after being worn out, and demanding replacement. Bean saw the trend of shabby people returning things they didn't purchase or flat wore out, and were forced to pull the plug. Proof of purchase doesn't stop those folks from returning again and again. The spirit of the warranty was to make sure that if a product failed before it's reasonable time then the company would replace it, not that the company was obligated to take back a 50 year old pair of pants because someone who wore them down to a film, got fat and then split the seams. ![]() There's no profit to be made when someone who wears out a product over decades, misconstrues the intent of the warranty, and demands a replacement.
